Brigitte Bardot

In a career spanning over 40 years, Terry O'Neill's name has become synonymous with the celebrity photographic portrait. This display, over four screens on the Balcony Gallery, contains a selection of forty of his most telling portraits, in both black-and-white and colour.

The display is timed to coincide with the publication of Celebrity: The Photographs of Terry O'Neill by Little Brown and features many of the portraits from the book, alongside lesser-known works. The selection reflects aspects of his varied career from a chronicler of swinging sixties London to location film shots of American stars in Hollywood, Arizona, Palm Beach and Las Vegas.

Frank Sinatra

The display includes early pictures of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, as well as an intimate portrait of Twiggy at home with her mother, and iconic close-ups of the fashionable couple of the era - Terence Stamp and Jean Shrimpton.

A series of double portraits features Joan and Jackie Collins, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, and Michael Caine and Bob Hoskins.

The British Establishment is represented by an "at home" study of The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh with a favourite corgi and a portrait of Tony and Cherie Blair and their children inside No.10 Downing Street.

In America, O'Neill photographed Paul Newman and Lee Marvin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis and Dean Martin. These pictures are complemented by later studies of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Micky Rourke and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Very interesting article. Too bad I won't be in London in time to see this show. I'd love to see the Swingin' London shots, especially.
